The University traced its beginnings to Davidson Academy chartered by North Carolina in 1785. Its name was changed in 1806 to Cumberland College. The name was again changed in 1826 to the University of Nashville. In 1855, the Western Military Institute of Georgetown, Kentucky, joined with the Univ. to become the Literary Department. In February 1862 the buildings were taken over and used as a Federal hospital. After the Civil War the preparatory school, Montgomery Bell Academy, was established. ...
